Grand Valley State built a 44-19 halftime lead and never looked back en route to an 84-39 victory over Marygrove College Tuesday night at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 8-2 overall on the year and will next be in action Thursday, Jan. 8 at Saginaw Valley State.
Sophomore forward Kara Crawford started the game for the Lakers with a three-pointer from the top of the key, followed by a pair of Kim Wyngaard layups and a jumper from freshman forward Emma Veach for a 9-0 Laker lead. GVSU outscored Marygrove 12-1 over the last 6:09 for the 44-19 halftime lead.
The only thing that held the Laker offense in check the second half was a shot clock malfunction that caused a delay in the game of about 15 minutes. GVSU outscored marygrove 40-20 in the second half and the Laker bench scored 54 of 84 points in the game.
Freshman center Jessica Trambley led the way with career-highs in points (16) and rebounds (9). Sophomore forward Kara Crawford was the only other Laker in double figures with 11 points. No Laker played more than 20 minutes and 13 reached the scoring column. Freshman guard Rachel Woodruff dished out a team-high eight assists, pulled down five rebounds and scored five points, while fellow freshman, Jasmine Padin, dished out seven assists. Junior guard Tayloy Silas hit a pair of three-pointers and freshman forward Kate McDonald hit all three of her shots for six points. GVSU held a 47-13 reboundng advantage and hit all six of its free throw attempts. In addition, the Lakers dished out a season-high 26 assists on 36 buckets. The Lakers also hit on 55.4 percent of its shots from the floor (36-65).
