Grand Valley State shot 60.0 percent from the field, including a 67.6 mark in the second half, during a 116-51 rout of Marygrove. Six Lakers scored in double-figures in the win, led by a career-high 15 points from freshman Nick West.
West also grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the winning effort. The Lakers (8-2, 3-2 GLIAC) will play their next game in University Center, Mich. against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals at 8 p.m. on Jan. 8.
Senior Pete Trammell also set a career-high, grabbing 11 rebounds in the winning effort. Sophomores Toreau Brown and Anthony Ianni both recorded 11 rebounds, as well, which were both career-highs. The Lakers out-rebounded 64-25 in the game. Senior Jerret Smith dished out a career-high eight assists for GVSU.
An early 9-0 run put Grand Valley State up 17-5, capped off by five straight points from redshirt freshman Alvin Storrs, who finished the game with 15 points. Grand Valley State also used stifling defense in the win, preventing the Mustangs from reaching double digits until just 7:45 remained in the first half. By that point, the Lakers held a 19-point lead, 30-11. With 3:13 left in the opening half, Grand Valley State led 40-16. GVSU went on a 10-2 run to close the half, culminating with a pair of free throws from freshman Wes Trammell and a 50-18 lead. Wes Trammell finished with a career-high seven points.
An 18-0 Grand Valley State run that spanned 3:45 defined the first section of the second half. By the end of the run, 11:10 remained in the contest and GVSU held a virtually insurmountable 50-point lead, 77-27. Sophomore K'Len Morris scored nine points during the run, including two three-pointers and a rare four-point play after being fouled on one of them. GVSU kept the pressure on and hit the 100-point mark on a shot by Brown with 4:55 left in the game. The Lakers shot 60.0 percent from the floor while holding Marygrove to a shooting percentage of 23.8.
