Grand Valley State outscored Hillsdale 42-23 in the second half and went on to claim a 71-49 GLIAC victory at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena Saturday night. GVSU improves to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in GLIAC action, while Hillsdale is 5-2 and 3-2.
Hillsdale led 41-38 with 14:32 left in the second half, but a pair of free throws by senior forward Pete Trammell started a 28-4 GVSU run over a span of 10:25. Freshman guard Alvin Storrs scored on a layup to give the Lakers a 42-41 lead at the 13:41 mark. Jumpers from K'Len Morris and P. Trammell sandwiched a Hillsdale free throw. HC then hit a two more from the charity stripe to pull the Chargers within two (46-44). Sophomore center Anthony Ianni scored six straight points for the Lakers on a layup, a pair from the free throw line and a jumper from the left wing to give GVSU a 52-44 lead. Sophomore forwards Justin Ringler and Toreau Brown each split a pair of free throws to conclude the 8-0 run. Hilldale's Tony Gugino hit a free throw to pull the Chargers within nine (54-45), but GVSU answered with a 12-0 run. Brown scored in the paint, followed by a Ringler layup and another Brown jumper in the paint. Ianni hit another jumper that gave him a career-high eight points and upped the Laker lead to 17 (62-45). Ringler scored on another layup and sophomore center Mike Przydzial added a pair of free throws to put the finishing touches on the 28-4 run and give GVSU a 66-45 lead.
Hillsdale college opened the game with a 10-0 run as Grand Valley State did not get on the scoreboard until freshman guard Wes Trammell hit a jumper from the paint at the 15:57 mark. A pair of free throws by Brown gave GVSU its first lead of the contest (15-14) with 9:46 left in the first half.
Brown led GVSU with career-highs in points (17) and rebounds (9), while Pete Trammell added 13 points and eight rebounds. Storrs added nine points and a career-high eight rebounds and Ringler chipped in nine points and five caroms. Ianni scored eight points and pulled down three rebounds in 12 minutes of action. GVSU outscored Hilldale 38-18 in the paint and the Laker bench held a 30-11 scoring advantage over the Chargers. In addition, GVSU outrebounded Hillsdale 46-25 and recorded season-high 10 steals.
