Senior guard Pete Trammell tied a career-high with 28 points to lead #9 Grand Valley State to a 72-62 victory over Ferris State in the GLIAC opener for both schools Monday night. GVSU improves to 5-0 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-3. Grand Valley State will hit the road for GLIAC tilts this Thursday at Tiffin and Saturday at Ashland.
GVSU freshman guard Alvin Storrs scored the opening two points of the game for the Lakers, but Ferris State reeled off 10 straight points to take a 10-2 lead. GVSU clawed its way back in the game and when sophomore forward Toreau Brown hit a pair of free throws at the 8:50 mark the Lakers had a 22-21 lead. Trammell connected on a pair from the charity stripe to give GVSU a 33-32 halftime lead. Ferris State sophomore guard Bryan Pasciak scored the first two points of the second half to give the Bulldogs a 34-33 lead, but Trammell answered with a layup of his own to give the Lakers the lead for good. Trammell scored 11 of the Lakers' first 13 points of the second half and his 3-pointer at teh 15:53 mark gave GVSU a 46-38 lead. Sophomore center Anthony Ianni hit one of two from the charity stripe at the 6:38 mark to give GVSU its largest lead (61-48) of the game.
GVSU scored 38 points in the paint, while Ferris State managed just 12. The Lakers also held a 14-6 in fast break points and a 21-13 advantage in points off turnovers. Trammell hit 9-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point land en route to his game-high 28 points. Sophomore forward Toreau Brown chipped in 11 points, while K'Len Morris added 10 points. Ianni tied his career-high with six points, while sophomore forward Justin Ringler scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds. The Lakers shot 57.1 percent from the floor (24-42) and outrebounded the Bulldogs 35-28.
