Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State won its third consecutive game to start the season, defeating Saint Joseph's 75-72 on Monday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Sophomore Toreau Brown set three career-highs in the win, helping the No. 11 Lakers to a 3-0 record.

Brown scored a career-high 12 points, and was one of three Lakers to score in double figures. Senior Pete Trammell recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Justin Ringler finished the night with 13 points and three steals. Brown also set career marks with eight rebounds and three assists.

A three-pointer from Wes Trammell at the 12:52 mark of the first half put GVSU up 12-3, but Austin Peebles single-handedly kept the Pumas in the game, scoring their first 12 points, making the score 18-12 in favor of the Lakers. Peebles finished with a team-high 25 points in the losing effort.

After a three-pointer from Peebles made the score 33-25 with 1:49 remaining in the opening half, the Lakers scored the last five points of the stanza, concluding with a layup in the paint by Anthony Ianni with three seconds left, sending the teams into the locker rooms with GVSU up 38-25.

The Pumas chipped away at that lead in the second half, cutting it three with a Peebles long-ball at the 16:57 mark of the second. GVSU kept scoring, though, and a fast-break layup by Jerret Smith with 8:48 left in the game extended the Laker lead to double digits at 55-45.

Ringler hit a jumper with 5:06 left in the game to give Grand Valley State a 12-point lead at 63-51, but Saint Joseph's stayed around. Peebles was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to cut the lead to six points with just more than three minutes remaining. Jason Chorba hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with just three seconds left in the game, but Trammell drained two free throws to end the game at 75-72.
