#1 Lakers Finish Season with 1-0 Loss in Regional Championship

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State lost its first home match since Sept. 4, 2005, falling 1-0 to No. 8 Wisconsin Parkside in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championship on Friday afternoon. Before Friday's match, the No. 1 Lakers had never been shut out at home under head coach Dave DiIanni. The 2008 senior class finishes their GVSU career with a record of 81-7-2 (.911).

The Rangers scored on a free kick in the second half to advance to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals against Metropolitan State in Allendale on Sunday, Nov. 23. Kristina Nasturzio made four saves in net for the Lakers, while Cassie Glodowski stopped all six shots she faced in the shutout win.

The game was scoreless through the first 68 minutes before Grand Valley State committed a foul just outside the 18-yard box. While Nasturzio was setting up the wall from the far post, Meredith Novak took a quick shot to the near post to put the Rangers up 1-0 at the 68:11 mark.

Grand Valley State outshot the Rangers 14-7 overall, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Katy Tafler led the Lakers with five shots, including four shots on goal.

The Lakers set an NCAA Division II record with 19 shutouts this season, and heading into the match, they were ranked first in goals-against average (.182), shutout percentage (.864) and save percentage (.923). Nasturzio was also ranked first in Division II in goals-against average (.192). Grand Valley State had earned a point in 43 consecutive home matches, which ranks third in the Division II record book.
