Allendale, Mich. -
Grand Valley State shut out its seventh straight opponent on Sunday, Oct. 5, defeating Saginaw Valley State 1-0. The No. 1 Lakers have shut out 11 of their first 12 opponents and allowed just two goals through 12 matches. Kristina Nasturzio has put together a shutout streak of 650:55 through eight matches with two saves against the Cardinals. GVSU (12-0, 7-0 GLIAC) will play its third straight home match against Northern Michigan on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.
Katy Tafler scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season with 3:21 left in the first half to put the Lakers up 1-0. GVSU outshot SVSU 18-4, including a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The Lakers also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Grand Valley State has now won 20 consecutive GLIAC contests (8th in Division II) and 30 straight regular season matches. The Lakers have not lost in Allendale for 33 consecutive matches (7th in Division II).
Joyce Rose started the match with a shot on goal at the 4:17 mark. SVSU keeper Anne Bershbach turned that shot away, along with seven others on the day. Cassidy Lau took SVSU's only shot of the first half in the 36th minute, but Nasturzio was up to the task. At the 41:39 mark, Kylee Merino won a free ball at midfield and played it to Jamie Radley. Radley passed the ball to Tafler, who dribbled in to the six-yard line and put a shot past Bershbach for her 11th goal of the season.
Tafler had another great opportunity in the second half, but her shot at 51:10 went off the crossbar and over the net. Rose played well offensively and put the pressure on the Cardinal defense, taking five shots and utting three of them on frame. Tafler too four shots and finished with two shots on goal.
