#8 Lakers Topple Findlay for 12th Consecutive Victory

Allendale, Mich. - The #8 Grand Valley State Lakers took little time in knocking off Findlay on Friday evening (Oct. 3) at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena for their 12th consecutive victory. In an hour and 12 minutes, the Lakers defeated the Oilers, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-18) to push their overall record to 15-2, 8-0 in league play. Findlay falls to 7-11 overall, 1-7 in the GLIAC.

Grand Valley State also pushed its impressive home winning streak to 26 matches, as the Lakers have not lost at home since Oct. 7, 2006. In the win streak, GVSU has recorded 21 victories of the 3-0 variety.

While the Lakers were unable to put a sizeable lead on the Oilers in the opening set, GVSU was never in serious trouble. The teams were tied at 13-13 before Grand Valley State scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-14 advantage. Junior Katey Crichton served four points in the run, including a service ace and a kill. Both teams traded points until GVSU ended the match with a kill from sophomore Rebeccah Rapin.

In the second set, the teams were tied at 9-9 before Grand Valley State pushed the score to a 15-10 lead. Findlay would rally and cut the lead to 18-15 before GVSU scored seven of the set's final nine points.

The third set was close as well, as the teams were knotted at 13-13 midway through the set. GVSU led 18-16, but put together a nice 7-2 run to close out the set and match.

Grand Valley State hit a solid .312 for the match, including two sets above .300. The Lakers tallied a .323 clip in the opening set and a .344 hitting percentage to close the match. GVSU forced Findlay into 19 attack errors and held the Oilers to a .135 hitting percentage.

The Lakers recorded 41 kills and split them among eight players, led by Rapin's match-high 10 kills. The sophomore hit .471 for the match with a pair of block assists.

Senior setter Jamie Ashmore dished 24 assists, recorded six kills, and connected at a .545 hitting percentage. Junior Kaity Gormley added eight kills and senior Danielle Alexander tallied seven kills. Both Gormley and Alexander totaled three block assists each, while Alexander notched the match's lone solo block.

GVSU head coach Deanne Scanlon is now 13-1 against Findlay in her career.

The #8 Lakers return to the court on Saturday (Oct. 4) for a 4:00 p.m. match against South Division foe, Hillsdale. It is the `Breast Cancer Awareness' match, as all fans in attendance are urged to wear pink to show their support. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free pink Lakers t-shirt.
