Lakers Fall to Northwood 5-1 in GLIAC Championship

Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State ended its fall season with a 5-1 loss to Northwood in the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, Oct. 26. GVSU (10-2) went into the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and ended it in second place after wins over Saginaw Valley State and Ashland.

The Timberwolves took all three points in doubles play, although Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston put up a hard-fought 8-6 decision. The third doubles pairing of Katelyn Schaffer and Jackie Shipman also lost by a close two-set margin, 8-6.

Shipman earned the only GVSU point at sixth singles, downing her opponent 6-1, 6-2. Northwood took two points at first and second singles to close out the match with a score of 5-1. In GLIAC Tournament play, the match is stopped as soon as the first team reaches five points.

Grand Valley State closes out the fall season with an overall singles record of 61-13 (.824). In dual play, GVSU is 54-7 (.885), which includes a mark of 49-5 (.907) in GLIAC play. Trout, Shipman and Schaffer all finish the year with perfect singles records in dual play. Trout closes the season with a mark of 11-0, while Shipman and Schaffer are both 10-0.
