Midland, Mich. -
Grand Valley State earned its second consecutive 5-0 win of the day on Saturday, Oct. 25, defeating Ashland to earn a spot in the final match of the GLIAC Championships. GVSU (10-1) will take on Northwood for the GLIAC title tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Midland, Mich.
The Lakers started the match in the same way they did against Saginaw Valley State earlier and took all three doubles points. Audrey Koopsen and Maria Gassanova teamed up to win at first doubles 8-4. GVSU won at both second and third doubles by scores of 8-2. Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston played in the second slot, while Katelyn Schaffer and Jackie Shipman went at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, GVSU needed only two matches to seal the victory, since GLIAC Tournament play stops after one team earns five points. Schaffer won at third singles 6-3, 6-0 and Trout won 6-2, 6-1 in the fifth spot. Trout was the only Laker to earn four points in the two 5-0 victories on Saturday.
Grand Valley State is the No. 2 seed in the GLIAC Championships and will take on perennial No. 1 seed Northwood tomorrow morning. The Timberwolves hung on for a close 5-4 victory over the Lakers earlier this season; the only loss that GVSU suffered all season long.
Grand Valley State has now posted a record of 53-5 (.914) for singles play in dual matches. Trout, Schaffer and Shipman have posted records of 11-0, 10-0 and 9-0, respectively, in singles dual play. GVSU is also 26-7 (.788) in doubles play during dual matches.
