Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State won in convincing fashion in the first round of the GLIAC Championships, blanking Saginaw Valley State 5-0. GVSU (9-1) will play the winner of the Ashland/Ferris State match in the second round later today.

The Lakers took all three points in doubles competition, with Audrey Koopsen and Maria Gassanova leading the way at first doubles. The duo won their match 8-4. Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston claimed an 8-2 win at second doubles and Katelyn Schaffer and Jackie Shipman took care of business with an 8-1 win at third doubles.

GVSU finished the match by taking points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Gassanova won 7-5, 6-2 in the second spot and Trout took the fourth spot 6-2, 6-2. In tournament play, the match is stopped when one team reaches five points.
