#6 Lakers Handle #24 Indianapolis in Four Sets at GLVC-GLIAC Crossover

Indianapolis, Ind. - #6 Grand Valley State opened the inaugural GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind. on Friday morning (Oct. 17) with a 3-1 victory over #24 Indianapolis. The Lakers dropped the Greyhounds by the scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-21 for their 16th consecutive victory. GVSU improves to 19-2 on the season, while UI falls to 20-6.

Teams from the two conferences were seeded based on league record. Grand Valley State is the #1 seed from the GLIAC with a record of 11-0, while Indianapolis was the #4 seed from the GLVC with a 9-2 league mark.

The Lakers are now 4-2 against top-25 teams this season and it was their first match against a ranked team since defeating #19 West Florida on Sept. 6.

In a tightly contested match, GVSU was able to pull away in four competitive sets. The Lakers and Indianapolis were comparable on the stat sheet, although GVSU tallied more kills (59-49), assists (54-45), digs (64-53), and a better hitting percentage (.271-.201). Both teams record six total team blocks.

Grand Valley State was led by junior Whitney Tremain and senior Danielle Alexander. Tremain tallied a season-high 17 kills and connected for a .257 hitting percentage. Her previous season-best was 10 kills against Augustana on Sept. 5.

Alexander was again strong, as the All-American totaled 16 kills, only three errors, and a .382 attack percentage. She added four digs, a service ace, and the match's lone block solo.

Senior setter Jamie Ashmore dished 44 assists and added five kills and five digs. Sophomore Rebeccah Rapin recorded nine kills, a .381 attack clip, and a team-high four block assists.

GVSU hit .321 in the opening set, .342 in the third, and .256 in the fourth set. The Lakers held Indianapolis to a .073 attack mark in the fourth and final set.

The Greyhounds had three players total double-figures in kills, led by Cheneta Morrison (13 kills, eight digs, four block assists), Kristina Hefferan (12 kills), and Courtney Anglemyer (11 kills, three block assists).

For the second time this season, Grand Valley State will face two ranked opponents in the same day. At 5:30 p.m., the Lakers will face #21 Northern Kentucky, the #2 seed from the GLVC. On Sept. 6, GVSU defeated then-#21 Chico State and #19 West Florida by 3-0 scores.
