Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead an never looked back en route to an 86-45 non-conference victory over Tiffin Tuesday night at the GVSU Arena. GVSU improves to 17-0, the best start in school history.
Senior forward Nick Freer tallied a pair of dunks in the opening seven minutes, then hit two free throws to give GVSU an 18-7 lead with 12:14 left in the opening half. Tiffin was never able to get the Laker lead into single digits and GVSU eventually led by as many 21 points (37-16) in the first half.
Leading 37-21, GVSU opened the second half with a 22-6 run to build a 59-27 lead with 12:34 left in the game. The Laker lead reached 40 (82-42) on a dunk by freshman Toreau Brown. Grand Valley State outscored Tiffin 49-24 in the second half.
Senior center Callistus Eziukwu led GVSU with 17 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Jason Jamerson added 14 points and five rebounds. Pete Trammell scored nine points and Nick Freer eight points and seven boards. GVSU shot 55.6 percent from the floor (35-63) and outrebounded Tiffin 43-18. GVSU pulled down 16 offensive rebounds. Tiffin shot 37.0 percent from the field (17-46).
Grand Valley State will host West Michigan rival Ferris State Saturday night at 8 p.m.
