Seniors Jason Jamerson and Callistus Eziukwu combined for 40 of Grand Valley State's 71 points in a 71-54 victory against Michigan Tech in Houghton, Mich. The win was the 16th in a row for the No. 2 Lakers, who have not lost yet this season (16-0, 5-0). Jamerson finished with 21 and Eziukwu added 19 and six rebounds in the winning effort. The 17-point win by the Lakers was the fourth in a row by at least 17 points. GVSU's next game will be at home in Allendale, Mich. against Tiffin on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The two seniors accounted for the first three baskets for Grand Valley, giving them an early 6-3 lead. Pete Trammell, who added 14 points and six rebounds on the day, followed that up with a three-pointer to give the Lakers a 9-3 lead at the 16:27 mark. Back-to-back three pointers from Jamerson and L.J. Kilgore stretched the lead to 11 points with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, 21-10.
Those points came during a streak of 6:30, during which the Lakers held the Huskies scoreless and went on a 17-0 run. When that run ended with a free throw by Robby Springborn, the Lakers held a 32-11 lead with 5:31 remaining in the first half. Two free throws by Fedrick Bowe closed out the first half and brought the Huskies to within 12 points, 41-29. The Lakers shot a scorching 68.2 percent in the first half.
3:34 into the second half, a jumper by Tim Strom brought Michigan Tech to within 10 points at 45-36. On the ensuing possession, Eziukwu missed a jumper, but Trammell tipped it in to put GVSU back up by 11, and the margin did not dip below 10 for the remainder of the contest. The Lakers used another strong defensive stretch to hold MTU scoreless for 6:37 in the second half, shutting the door on any hopes of a Huskies' comeback. By the time the streak ended, the Lakers had jumped to a 15 point lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
