Grand Valley State lost a conference game for the first time all season, dropping a 72-48 decision to Michigan Tech. The Huskies used a 28-3 run in the first half to down the Lakers. Erin Cyplik led GVSU with 16 points, while Katie Wysocky and Danae Danen both scored 21 points to lead MTU to the win. GVSU is now 9-5 on the season with a 4-1 conference mark. Their next game is on Saturday, Jan. 12 against in-state rival Ferris State. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. in Allendale, Mich.
Fittingly for MTU, Wysocky and Danen combined for the Huskies' first six points, Back-to-back layups by Lauren Buresh, who finished with 10 points and six rebounds, made the score 9-8 in favor of the Huskies at the 15:52 mark. From that point on, it was all Michigan Tech. GVSU did not score over the nest 7:59 and the Huskies opened up a 24-8 lead. Cyplik completed a three-point play with 7:53 remaining in the first half to make the score 24-11, but then MTU went on another run.
The next 13 points went to Tech, capped off by a three ball by Catherine Rottier. That made the score 37-11 in favor of Michigan Tech. Buresh made the last basket of the first half, a three-pointer at the 1:27 mark that cut the Huskies' lead to 37-14 heading into the locker rooms. GVSU struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 22.2 percent, while Michigan Tech shot 53.8 percent in the first 20 minutes to open up the 23-point halftime lead.
Kim Wyngaard, who finished the game with 11 points and six rebounds, started the second half with a jumper just eight seconds in, cutting the MTU lead to 21 points. Danen answered that with back-to-back long balls, sandwiched around a Buresh three, to re-establish a 24 point lead for the Huskies, 43-19. Everytime that GVSU threatened to make a run, Tech answered and the Lakers were never able to cut the lead to within 20 points, falling by the final score of 72-48.
