#2 Grand Valley State jumped out to a 40-21 halftime lead and never looked back en route to an 83-55 victory at Northern Michigan Thursday night. GVSU improved to 15-0 on the year, the best start in school history.
GVSU jumped out early on the Wildcats and never let up in the opening 20 minutes. Leading 19-12 with 10:05 left in the opening stanza, GVSU outscored Northern Michigan 21-9 over the final 9:55 to build a 19-point halftime advantage. Pete Trammell scored 10 points, while Callistus Eziukwu added eight in the scoring run. The Lakers shot a sizzling 65.4 percent from the floor (17-26) and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the three-point line in the first half.
Northern Michigan cut into the Lakers' 19-point first half lead and trailed by just 10 (54-44) with 9:32 left in the game. However, Callistus Eziukwu hit a jumper, followed by a Jason Jamerson bucket and another from Eziukwu layup to build the Laker advantage to 16 (60-44). Following an NMU basket, Grand Valley State scored eight straight points to increase its lead to 68-46 with 4:19 left in the game.
Junior forward Pete Trammell led the way offensively with a game-high 23 points, while senior center Callistus Eziukwu added a season-high 21 points. Senior guard L.J. Kilgore was the only other Laker in double figures with 10 points. Senior guard Jason Jamerson pulled down six rebounds, dished out five assists and recorded three steals. GVSU shot 63.3 percent from the floor for the game.
Grand Valley State will play the final game of a four-game road trip at Michigan Tech Saturday at 3 p.m.
