Lakers Claim 120-117 Victory At Indianapolis

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State captured a 120-117 victory at Indianapolis, using strong depth and six first-place finishes to pick up the win. Grand Valley State will next be in action at Hope Friday (Jan. 25) night. GVSU led 114-106 heading into the final event of the meet (400 free relay) and needed at least a second place finish to capture the victory. The Lakers captured second (3:14.04 and third (3:15.45) to ensure the team win.

The Lakers opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:32.85). Jeff Pauza followed with a second-place finish in the 1000 free (9:45.71), while Jordan Schrotenboer (1:46.19) and Kyle Burgher (1:47.43) turned in a second and a third in the 200 free. Schrotenboer added a second in the 200 back (1:58.69), while Burgher was third in the 500 free. Aaron Denton scored a third in the 50 free (22.66). Matt Witkowski finished first in the 200 IM (1:57.32), just outtouching Justin Pattermann's second (1:57.43). GVSU picked up significant points in diving as Evan Betts tallied first-place finishes on the both the 1-meter (307.10) and 3-meter (250.65) boards. His 1-meter score was a school-record. Patrick VanDommelen was third on the 1-meter (221.10) and second on the 3-meter (244.35). Pattermann recorded a first in the 200 fly (1:58.62), followed by Phil Watkis' second (1:59.53). Witkowski added a third in the 100 free (47.29).

The Lakers scored key points in the 200 breast as Philip Kaseska's just outtouched (2:13.12) Hans Hill (2:113.19) for the win. In addition to his second in 1000 free, Pauza was second in the 500 free (4:45.31).
