After heading into halftime leading 26-22, Grand Valley State University came out of the locker room on fire and went on a 30-6 run to start the second half. The streak helped the Lakers defeat Gannon by a final score of 60-47, advancing their overall record to 11-6 and their conference mark to 6-2. Kim Wyngaard led the Lakers with 17 points and Crystal Zick chipped in 13 points and five assists. Grand Valley's next game will be on Thursday, Jan. 24 against Northwood University in Midland, Mich. Tip-off for that game is slated for 6 p.m.
After the two teams went back and forth to start the game, the Lakers jumped out to a 12-4 on back-to-back three-pointers by Wyngaard and Jocelyn Ingram. Gannon came back to take the lead at 16-15 on a layup by Kim Vargas, who scored a game-high 23 points. Another three-pointer by Wyngaard at the 6:52 mark tied the game at 20-20. A layup by Carr tied the game at 22-22 and then she buried another one at the 4:19 mark to go up 24-22. The last basket of the first half was a fast-break layup by Zick with 3:33 left that gave the Lakers a 26-22 lead at the half.
Just 13 seconds into the second half, Wyngaard connected on a layup to make the score 28-22, and it was the beginning of a run for Grand Valley. The Lakers went on a 30-6 run in the beginning of the second half to put the game away. After Vargas made a layup at the 17:43 mark to make the score 30-28 in favor of Grand Valley, it would be more than 10 minutes before Gannon would score again.
Grand Valley rattled off the next 26 points of the game to double up on Gannon and make the score 56-28. A three-pointer by Kristina Freeman at the 6:39 mark was the first basket of any kind for Gannon through a span of 11:04. Gannon eventually cut the lead to just 13 points, 60-47, but it was too little too late, as Grand Valley State picked up their 11th win of the season.
