Grand Valley State claimed a victory in the final event of the evening and went on to claim a 127.5-115.5 victory over Calvin College Friday night at the GVSU Pool. Grand Valley State will return to action Saturday at Indianapolis.
Grand Valley State led 114.5-111.5 going into the final event (200 free relay) of the non-league dual, setting the stage for a winner take all final event. Calvin led the first two legs of the relay, but Katelyn Childers overtook Calvin on the third leg and Kim Baughman increased the lead for a winning time of 1:39.87. Calvin touched in 1:40.96. The Lakers also took top honors in the 200 medley relay to start the evening, touching in 1:51.31.
Jenna Thayer recorded a pair of first-place finishes, touching in 2:12.15 in the 200 IM and 59.12 100 butterfly. Erin Kinney recorded a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:19.83), while also finishing second 200 free (1:59.29). Allison Scholz notched a first-place finish in the 50 free (25.37), followed by Kim Baughman in second (25.89). Danielle Buglio touched in 1:01.71 for a first-place finish in the backstroke.
Megan Hahler swam a solid race in the 1000 free, finishing second (11:00.94), followed by Katie Lawrie in third (11:01.65). Alison VanKampen finished second in the 100 breast (1:10.06), tied for second in the 100 free (56.17) and finished third in the 200 IM (2:16.01).
