Lakers Use Balanced Scoring to Down Mercyhurst 70-54

Allendale, Mich. - Four different players scored double figures for Grand Valley State University as the Lakers routed Mercyhurst on Thursday night, 70-54. Crystal Zick scored a game-high 18 points and Lauren Buresh chipped in a career-high 13 points to help GVSU win its tenth game of the season. Grand Valley State is now 10-6 on the year and 5-2 in the GLIAC. Their next match is on Saturday, Jan. 19 against Gannon with tip-off slated for 1 p.m.

Kim Wyngaard, who finished the game with 16 points and six rebounds, scored the first basket for GVSU at the 19:12 mark to make the score 2-2. The teams traded baskets until Zick gave the Lakers the lead with 13:22 left in the first half when she drained a three-pointer. A long ball by Erin Cyplik, who scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, extended that lead to 16-12 just 1:23 later.

Cyplik hit another long ball to give the Lakers their biggest lead yet at 22-14 with just less than 10 minutes remaining. The lead became nine points when Zick drove into the lane and made a layup to make the score 32-23 with 4:16 remaining in the first half. Mercyhurst battled back and cut the lead to five points going into halftime, 38-33. Cyplik, Wyngaard and Zick all had 10 points by halftime.

Buresh started the second half off with a three from the top of the key just six seconds in to make the lead eight points. The lead became 10 points, 45-35, when Wyngaard scored on a driving layup at the 18:00 minute mark. Another three by Buresh pushed the lead up to 14 points and then back-to-back layups by Zick gave Grand Valley State a 55-37 gap to defend.

A layup by Cyplik with 11:05 extended the lead to 20 points at 59-39. Nicole Carr scored her only two points at the 6:38 mark to make the lead 24 points, 67-43. GVSU hit 70 points with 4:26 left in the game and held on for a 70-54 lead.
