GVSU sealed its fifth consecutive win to start the season as they defeated Lake Superior State in Allendale on Saturday by a score of 7-2. GVSU stands at 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC on the year, while LSSU falls to 0-4 overall and in GLIAC play. The Lakers are off until Friday, October 5th when they travel to Big Rapids for a tilt with Ferris State.
The Lakers dropped the match in No. 1 doubles but rallied in the next two for a 2-1 lead after doubles competition. Jenna Killips and Emily Zellner earned an 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles while Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout blanked their opponents 8-0. The tandem of Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte fell 8-1, dropping their overall record to 6-5. Grand Valley's No. 2 and 3 doubles teams are each sporting 9-1 records.
GVSU picked up five of six singles matches en route to the 7-2 victory. Killips dropped her match to LSSU's Megan LaMothe, 6-3, 6-1. The remaining singles matchups were Laker victories in straight sets. Koopsen won by a 6-2, 6-4 count while Johnston earned a 6-1, 6-1 win. GVSU dominated Lake Superior State in the bottom half of singles, as three Laker freshmen did not drop a single game. Trout, Katelyn Grashorn, and Jackie Shipman all won, 6-0, 6-0.
All GVSU singles competitors are currently holding on to a winning record. The four Laker freshmen of Shipman, Johnston, Trout, and Grashorn have bolted out to a hot start. Shipman has yet to lose a game in her collegiate career with an 8-0 record and has only lost one set. Grashorn boasts a 9-1 record while Johnston stands at 8-1. Trout is not far behind at 8-2. All four are yet to lose a match in GLIAC play (4-0).
