#11 Grand Valley State captured its nine straight victory with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 36-34) sweep at Saginaw Valley State Friday night. The Lakers improve to 14-2 overall and remain perfect in the GLIAC with a 4-0 record. The Cardinals drop to 13-4 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play. GVSU will travel to Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
Grand Valley State started off the match by jumping out to an early 11-4 lead, but Saginaw Valley State battled back to win the next four points and cut the lead to 11-8. GVSU then went on a run of its own to go ahead 15-9 and once again the Cardinals wouldn't go away and came back to trail, 18-14. SVSU scored the next four points to tie the game at 18-18 and then the Lakers took a slim 22-21 lead. GVSU went on an 8-1 run to jump out to a 29-22 lead and although SVSU scored the next two points, it wasn't enough to overcome the late Laker run. GVSU closed out the game, 30-24. As a team, the Lakers tallied an outstanding .455 hitting percentage as they recorded 18 kills and just three errors on 33 total attacks.
Saginaw Valley State took an early lead in the second game, but GVSU quickly tied the game at 7-7. The two teams battled back and forth tying the game at 11-11 and later 13-13. SVSU took a 16-13 lead and the Lakers came back to tie it at 17-17. The Lakers then went on a 6-0 run to claim a 23-18 lead. Saginaw Valley cut the lead to within four points, 28-24, but GVSU scored two out of the final four points to seal the 30-26 win.
The Cardinals took another lead early in the start of game three, going ahead, 11-7. The Lakers came back once again and tied the match at 14-14 and then took a 21-18 lead. GVSU pushed its lead to five points, 27-22 and SVSU scored the next three points to trail, 27-25. After a Laker timeout, the Lakers went up, 29-26, needing just one more point to seal the match win. However, Saginaw Valley scored the next four points to go ahead, 30-29. The Lakers tied the match at 30-30 to force extra points. Both teams battled back and forth, tying the game at 31, 32, 33, and 34 points apiece. GVSU ended the game and the match on back-to-back kills by freshman Rebeccah Rapin and Kaity Gormley to win 36-34.
Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple tallied 11 kills, four service aces, and five digs, while junior outside hitter Lauren Reber also had 11 kills and added 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander recorded nine kills, two digs, five assisted blocks, and hit .571 and freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin added eight kills, five assisted blocks, while hitting .353. Sophomore outside hitter Kaity Gormley posted seven kills and eight digs in the match.
Junior setter Jamie Ashmore recorded four kills, 40 assists, six digs, and an ace and senior libero Allyson Riley had eight digs and two assists.
The Lakers hit .306 as a team and the Cardinals posted a .154 hitting percentage in the match. GVSU added six service aces, seven team blocks, and 14 more kills than Saginaw Valley.
Grand Valley State will play another GLIAC contest at Northwood on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
