#11 Grand Valley State won its sixth straight match with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-19, 30-17) victory over Lake Superior State as they opened GLIAC play on Thursday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 11-2 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC, while LSSU drops to 4-8 and 0-1. Grand Valley will host Michigan Tech on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m. and Northern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4:00 p.m.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 10-7 lead in game one and then scored the next four out of five points to take a 14-8 lead. LSSU fought back and cut the lead to four points, 21-17, but the GVSU Lakers went on to score the next nine straight points to end game one, 30-17. GVSU tallied a .382 hitting percentage in the game and LSSU hit -.030.
GVSU went ahead 7-2 in the second game and then pushed the lead to 12-5. Lake Superior State cut the lead to 14-9 and GVSU scored the next four points to go up, 18-9. GVSU went ahead by 10 points, 22-12, and the closest LSSU would get again was seven points, 25-18. GVSU scored the next five out of six points to seal the 30-19 win. Grand Valley State hit .286, while Lake Superior State hit .034 in game two.
Grand Valley took a 10-6 lead in game three and pushed it to nine points, 19-10. GVSU led 24-14 and went on a 4-0 run to go ahead, 28-14. LSSU scored the next two points and then GVSU recorded a kill to lead 29-16 for match point. Lake Superior State scored the next point, but GVSU won the game, 30-17, and the match, 3-0. GVSU hit an outstanding .475 in the third and final game, while LSSU hit .023.
Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple led GVSU with 17 kills, three assisted blocks and hit .739. Junior Danielle Alexander tallied nine nkills, four assists, two aces, three assisted blocks, and a .533 hitting percentage, while freshman Rebeccah Rapin added seven kills, two digs, one solo and three assisted blocks as she hit .429. Sophomore outside hitter Kaity Gormley recorded six kills and four digs, while senior libero Allyson Riley had three assists and 19 digs. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore tallied four kills, 35 assists, four aces, eight digs and hit .500.
Grand Valley recorded 52 kills, 29 more than Lake Superior State. GVSU also added seven aces and seven team blocks. Grand Valley State hit .385 as a team, while LSSU posted a .009 hitting percentage.
Grand Valley State will continue GLIAC play at home as they host Michigan Tech on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:00 p.m. and Northern Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4:00 p.m.
