#11 Grand Valley State played its second five game match of the day, but this time the Lakers defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 3-2 (30-20, 30-27, 27-30, 24-30, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon in the Regis Premier Tournament in Denver, Colo. The Lakers conclude the tournament with a 2-2 record and have now posted a 6-2 overall record on the season. GVSU will travel to Ashland next Friday and Saturday for four matches in the Ashland Invitational.
Junior setter Jamie Ashmore got game one going for the Lakers as they tallied four straight points off her serve. The Lakers then jumped out to a 13-6 lead and went up by eight points, 17-9. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 20-16, but GVSU went on a run to go ahead, 28-19. The Lakers then scored the final two out of three points to take the 30-20 game one win. Cal State LA hit just .091 in the game and GVSU posted 17 kills and a .469 hitting percentage.
The Golden Eagles got hot to begin game two and jumped out to a 10-4 lead, but the Lakers came back to tie the game at 15-15. The two teams battled back and forth, but GVSU took a 27-24 lead. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 28-27, but the Lakers ended the game with a kill and a service ace to win game two, 30-27. Neither team hit well in game two, as GVSU posted a .163 attack percentage and Cal State LA hit .103.
GVSU went ahead first in game three, but Cal State LA tied the game at 10-10. The Lakers went on a 10-2 run to take a commanding 20-12 lead. The Golden Eagles went on a 13-5 run of their own to tie the game at 25-25. GVSU scored the next two points to go up, 27-25 and Cal State LA came back to score the next two points to tie the game at 27-27. The Golden Eagles took game three, 30-27, as they scored the final three points of the game. Once again, both teams hit poorly as the Lakers posted a .022 hitting percentage and the Golden Eagles hit -.081.
Grand Valley led most of the way in game four, taking a 10-6 lead, but once again the Golden Eagles wouldn't go away and tied the game at 15-15. Cal State LA went on an 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead. GVSU fought back to cut the lead to 28-24, but it was too late as the Golden Eagles sealed the 30-24 game, but scoring the final two points. The Lakers hit .098 in the game and the Golden Eagles tallied a .167 hitting percentage.
Cal State LA jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the deciding fifth game. The Lakers then went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 11-9, but GVSU pushed its lead to 14-10. Cal State LA scored the next two points to trail only 14-12, but a Laker kill sealed the game (15-12) and the match. GVSU hit .217 in the final game, while Cal State LA hit .048.
Grand Valley recorded 70 kills in the match, 18 more than its opponent. The Lakers also had 11 blocks, sveen aces, and a .170 team hitting percentage. The Golden Eagles recorded eight aces and 12 blocks, but hit just .070 as a team.
Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander tallied a career-high 17 kills, while adding two digs and a .364 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple recorded 15 kills, two solo and one assisted blocks, while freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin added a career-high 13 kills, five assisted blocks, and two assists. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young had nine kills, two aces, and 13 digs and sophomore Kaity Gormley tied her career-high with nine kills. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore tied her career-high with 56 assists and added 10 digs, four kills, two aces, and two solo and five assisted blocks. Senior libero Allyson Riley had 23 digs, two assists, and an ace.
