#11 Grand Valley State recorded its fourth straight sweep, recording a 3-0 (30-17, 30-25, 30-20) win over Lock Haven on Friday afternoon in the Regis Premier Tournament in Denver, Colo. GVSU remains a perfect 5-0 on the season, while Lock Haven drops to 1-3 overall. The Lakers will play Southwest Minnesota State tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in game one, recording three service aces. The Lakers pushed their lead to 16-6 and dominated the rest of the game. GVSU went up 25-15 and scored the final five out of seven points to seal the 30-17 win. The Lakers hit an outstanding .609 as a team in game one, posting 16 kills, while recording just two errors.
GVSU went ahead 7-1 in game two, but Lock Haven cut the lead to just three points at 12-9. The Lakers scored the next three points to go up, 15-9, but the Eagles scored the next 10 out of 14 points to tie the game at 19-19. Grand Valley pulled ahead 25-22 and then scored four straight points to take a 29-22 lead. Lock Haven scored the next two points, but the Lakers won the game, 30-24, on a kill by senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple. Neither team hit well in game two, as GVSu tallied a .061 hitting percentage and Lock Haven hit .031.
In game three, Lock Haven jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Lakers battled back to tied the game at 13-13. The two teams went back and forth, but Grand Valley rattled off eight straight points to take a 25-17 lead. Lock Haven pulled the game to 27-19, but GVSU scored the final three out of four points, winning the game, 30-25. The Lakers hit .343 as a team in game three and the Eagles recorded a .030 hitting percentage.
Grand Valley State was led by senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple who hit .526. She tallied a team-high 12 kills, three assisted blocks, one dig, and one assist. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander recorded eight kills, three digs, and three assisted blocks, while hitting .462. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young had five kills and seven digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kaity Gormley added five kills and a .571 hitting percentage. Freshman outside hitter Leslie Curtis posted five kills and senior libero Allyson Riley had 10 digs, four assists, and an ace. Sophomore outside hitter Katey Crichton recorded two kills, four assists, four digs, and six service aces, while junior setter Jamie Ashmore added 21 assists, three kills, and four aces.
Grand Valley hit .308 as a team as they recorded 44 kills. GVSU also added 11 service aces and four team blocks. Lock Haven hit just .122 as a team and had 30 kills.
GVSU will continue play in the Regis Premier Tournament tonight as they play Southwest Minnesota State at 9:30 p.m. ET.
