#4-seed Grand Valley State dropped a 3-2 decision in 10 innings to #5-seed Wayne State in the first game of the Great Lakes Region Tournament hosted at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill. The Warriors scored the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning to take the victory. The Lakers fall to 32-17 overall, while Wayne State improves to 40-15. Grand Valley State will play the loser of the SIUE-Shepherd game on Friday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Grand Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski hit a two out home run to center field to put the Lakers on the scoreboard first. GVSU added another run as junior designated player Elizabeth Smith knocked one out of the park to left field, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
Center fielder Sarah Berry started off the Wayne State sixth inning with a home run to left field to cut the Laker lead to 2-1. The Warriors tied the game up in the seventh inning, starting the rally off with a leadoff infield single. Two outs later, first baseman Lindsey Perry singled in the game-tying run.
Neither team could score in the eighth or ninth innings. Catcher Sarah Kish singled with one out in the top of the tenth, but then was out as Berry reached on a fielder's choice. Laura Guzman pinch ran for Berry and advanced to second on a passed ball. Guzman scored the game-winning run on a double to right center field by Meredith Boxberger.
Grand Valley State tallied seven hits on the game and two errors, while Wayne State posted 10 hits and one error. The Warriors left nine runners on base and the Lakers stranded seven.
Sophomore pitcher Lori Andjelich (16-7) suffered the loss, pitching all 10 innings. She allowed 10 hits and two earned runs, while recording seven strikeouts.
Both sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga and sophomore left fielder Karen Walters each went 2-for-4. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Grand Valley State has made the Great Lakes Region Tournament eight out of the last nine years and claimed the tournament title in 2002.
