Grand Valley State ended the regular season with a split at Hillsdale on Monday. The Lakers won game one, 7-2, but fell, 3-0 in game two. GVSU is now 29-13 on the season, while Hillsdale ends its season with a 17-24 overall record. Grand Valley State are the #4 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will #5 seed Northwood at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4 at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich.
Junior right fielder Sarah Holland started off game one with home run to right center field to put the Lakers up 1-0. Hillsdale came back in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. GVSU added another run in the fourth inning as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski singled to center field to start the inning. She moved second base on a single to left field by senior first baseman Crista Buresh. Two out later, freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg doubled to center field to tie the score at 2-2.
Moleski opened up the sixth inning with a home run to center field. Buresh then doubled to center field and scored as junior designated player Elizabeth Smith reached base on an error by the center fielder. A single to right field by Kronberg scored the third run of the inning for GVSU.
The Lakers added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the 7-2 victory. Holland began the inning with a single to left center field and moved to third as sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra doubled to left center field. Moleski doubled to center field to score both runs.
The Lakers tallied 11 hits in the game, while the Chargers posted just four. Moleski was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Kronberg went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Holland was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI and Buresh went 2-for-4.
Sophomore Lori Andjelich (14-5) picked up the win, allowing just four hits and two runs in seven innings. She also tallied five strikeouts.
Hillsdale scored one run in each of the first, third, and fifth innings to complete the 3-0 shutout in game two. The Chargers had six hits, while the Lakers posted just four. Freshman right fielder Rebecca Plummer, junior designated player Elizabeth Smith, junior center fielder Lisa Preuss, and sophomore left fielder Karen Walters each posted a hit for the Lakers.
Junior Stephanie Cole (13-6) suffered the loss, allowing six hits and three runs, while striking out five batters in five innings. Andjelich pitched the final two innings, striking out three of the six batters she faced.
