Lakers Sweep Findlay, 6-1, 7-0

Grand Valley State swept Findlay, 6-1 and 7-0 in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers improve to 22-7 overall and remain the only undefeated team in the GLIAC with a perfect 6-0 record. GVSU will host Ashland in another GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m.

Grand Valley started off game one by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior right fielder Sarah Holland started off the inning as she reached first base on an error by the shortstop. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a double by junior second baseman Kristin Moleski. Senior first baseman Crista Buresh tripled to right field to score Moleski and put the Lakers up, 2-0.

Findlay cut the Laker lead to 2-1 after hitting a home run in the top of the fourth, but GVSU came back and scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth inning to seal the 6-1 victory.

With one out in the fifth inning, Holland singled and advanced to second on a bunt single by sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra. Moleski walked to load the bases and Buresh drove in the run as she reached on a fielder's choice. Junior center fielder Lisa Preuss singled to left field to start the sixth inning and moved to second on a groundout by freshman Stephanee Schrader. Rudenga walked and advanced to second base on a passed ball. One out later, Holland singled to center field to score two runs. Woityra then singled to score Holland.

Grand Valley out hit the Oilers by a 10-2 margin. Holland went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Woityra was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Moleski went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and an RBI and Buresh was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Sophomore Lori Andjelich (11-1) threw all seven innings of action to pick up the win. She allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out eight.

Grand Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings of game two. With one out, Woityra singled to the shortstop and then stole second base. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as Buresh reached first base on an error by the right fielder.

Preuss started off the second inning by reaching first base on an error by the third baseman. She moved to second on a single by freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga. Holland singled to center field to drive in the two runs.

GVSU added another run in the top if the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take the 7-0 win. Moleski singled and scored on a double by junior designated player Elizabeth Smith to add the fourth Laker run. Freshman left fielder Rebecca Plummer started off the sixth inning by reaching first base on an error by the second baseman and advanced on a wild pitch. Woityra singled down the left field line to drive in Plummer. One out later, Buresh hit a two-run home run to give the Lakers the 7-0 victory.

Grand Valley tallied 11 hits in the game to the Oilers three. Findlay also committed four errors in the game. Woityra went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Kronberg was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Buresh was 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Junior Stephanie Cole (9-3) recorded the win, pitching all seven innings. She allowed just three hits in the shutout and struck out six.
