Lakers Sweep Bellarmine In Non-Conference Doubleheader, 4-1, 11-1

Grand Valley State swept Bellarmine in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday in Louisville, Ky. GVSU won game one, 4-1 and took game two, 11-1 in five innings. Grand Valley State out hit Bellarmine 21-8 in the two games and the Knights committed nine errors, while GVSU had just one. The Lakers improve to 20-7 overall, while the Knights fall to 14-18.

Grand Valley jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring one run in both the top of the third and fourth innings. Junior catcher Katie Kring started off the third inning with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga. One out later, junior right fielder Sarah Holland tallied a ground-rule double to score the first Laker run of the game.

In the fourth inning, junior second baseman Kristin Moleski singled to center field and moved to second base as senior first baseman Crista Buresh grounded out. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith singled to left field to drive in the second run for GVSU.

GVSU added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 4-0. With one out, Moleski singled through the left side and advanced to second base as Buresh reached first on a bunt single. Moleski then stole third base and both her and Buresh scored on a single to right field by Smith.

The Knights scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Laker lead. GVSU tallied seven hits in the game, while Bellarmine had five.

Sophomore Lori Andjelich (10-1) pitched all seven innings of play, allowing just five hits and one run, while tallying eight strikeouts. Junior second baseman Kristin Moleski went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while junior designated player Elizabeth Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Junior right fielder Sarah Holland had a hit and an RBI and junior catcher Katie Kring added one hit and a run scored in the win.

Grand Valley scored first again in game two, posting one run in each of the top of the first and third innings. With two outs in the top of the first, junior second baseman Kristin Moleski singled through the right side and moved to second base as senior first baseman Crista Buresh reached first on an error by the short stop. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith singled and Moleski scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

In the third inning, Smith singled down the left field line with one out. Freshman Amanda Rumsey pinch ran for Smith and advanced to second base on a grounder by junior center fielder Lisa Preuss. Freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg singled to center field to score Rumsey.

Bellarmine cut the lead to 2-1, scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning. The Lakers blew the game open by scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth inning on six hits and five errors by the Knights.

Smith started off the inning with a double and freshman Lesley Bates went in to pinch run for her. Bates scored as Preuss doubled through the right side. One out later, freshman third baseman Stephanee Schrader reached first base on a throwing error by the short stop, moving Preuss to third base. Sophomore left fielder Karen Walters singled down the left field line to score Preuss. Freshman right fielder Rebecca Plummer singled up the middle and scored another run on a throwing error by the center fielder. Sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra reached on a fielder's choice and Walters scored on an error by the pitcher. The bases were loaded as Buresh walked, moving Woityra to second and Plummer to third. Two more runs scored as Bates reached on an error by the third baseman and Preuss reached first base on an error by the short stop. Kronberg and Rudenga recorded back-to-back singles to drive in the final three runs of the inning.

Grand Valley out hit Bellarmine 14-3 and the Knights committed eight errors in the game. Nine different Lakers tallied a hit in the game. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith led the way, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while sophomore left fielder Karen Walters went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Junior second baseman Kristin Moleski was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior pitcher Stephanie Cole (8-3) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and one run in five innings of action. She walked one batter and struck out two.

Grand Valley State will play three doubleheaders this week, beginning with two non-conference game at Cornerstone on Tuesday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. The Lakers will then travel to Wayne State on Friday, April 6 at 3:00 p.m. and Hillsdale College on Saturday, April 7 for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
