Grand Valley State dropped a doubleheader to Winona State on Tuesday afternoon in Ft. Myers, Fla. GVSU fell 2-1 in game one and 3-2 in game two. The Lakers fall to 4-2 overall. GVSU will play a doubleheader against Ohio Vally on Thursday, March 8 in Bradenton, Fla. The first game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
For the first time this season, GVSU's opponent scored first, posting a run in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Winona State hit a single and a double to score the run. The Lakers tied up the game as junior designated player Elizabeth Smith started off the game for GVSU with a home run to left field.
In the third inning, Winona State hit a one out triple and the game-winning run scored on an error by the Lakers right fielder. Neither team scored another run the rest of the game. Grand Valley State left six runners on base, while Winona State stranded eight.
Grand Valley recorded just four hits in the game and Smith led the way, going 1-for-2 with the lone run scored and RBI. Sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra, junior center fielder Lisa Preuss, and junior right fielder Sarah Holland each tallied a hit in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Lori Andjelich suffered her first loss of the season, allowing seven hits, two runs, and two walks in seven innings of action. She also tallied nine strikeouts.
In game two, the Lakers posted two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra started off the game with a single to left field. One out later, junior second baseman Kristin Moleski doubled down the left field line. Both runs scored on a passed ball during Elizabeth Smith's at bat.
Winona State came back in the bottom of the first inning to score a run of its own. The next four innings went scoreless until the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Winona State drew two walks in the bottom of the seven inning and with two outs a single to center field brought home the winning run.
Grand Valley posted just four hits in the second game as well. Woityra recorded two of them and Moleski and sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga added a hit each.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole (2-1) pitched 6.2 innings of action, giving up six hits, two earned runs, four walks, and struck out four batters.
