Lakers Record 5-0 Victory Against Holy Family

Grand Valley State scored one run in the first five out of six innings to tally a 5-0 win over Holy Family on Sunday in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Lakers improve to 2-0 on the season. GVSU will play two more games on Monday, March 5, beginning with Wayne State (Neb.) at 9:00 a.m. followed by Saint Anselm at 11:00 a.m.

The Lakers put the game's first run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With one out sophomore shortstop Nichole Woityra singled to the second baseman. She advanced to second base on a single to the third baseman by junior second baseman Kristin Moleski. One out later, junior designated player Elizabeth Smith drove in Woityra on a single to right field.

GVSU added a second run in the second inning as junior center fielder Lisa Preuss started off the inning with a single to left center field. Sophomore third baseman Becky Rudenga pushed her over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. One out later junior right fielder Sarah Holland singled to center field to bring home the second Laker run.

The Lakers continued their scoring ways, posting a run in both the third and fourth innings. Freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg led off the third inning with a triple to left center field. With one out, senior first baseman Crista Buresh walked and then Preuss singled up the middle to drive in Kronberg. Holland started off the fourth inning with a single, but then got out on a fielder's choice by Woityra. Woityra got caught stealing second for the second out of the inning. Moleski singled to left field and then stole second. Kronberg walked and then Smith drove Moleski in to scored the fourth run.

GVSU added its fifth and final run in the sixth innings as Moleski started off the inning with an inside-the-park home run to center field.

The Lakers tallied 13 hits in the game, while Holy Family only recorded three. Six different Lakers posted at least two hits. Moleski led the way, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Woityra was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Kronberg went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Smith posted two hits and two RBI, while Preuss went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Holland also added two hits and an RBI.

Junior pitcher Stephanie Cole recorded the Lakers second shutout of the day, throwing all seven innings of action. She allowed just three hits and one walk, while tallying five strikeouts.
