Grand Valley State dominated on both the mound and at the plate as it recorded a sweep of Lake Superior State in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday at the GVSU Softball field. GVSU won game one, 5-0, and tallied a 15-0 victory in five innings in game two. Grand Valley improves to 18-7 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC, while LSSU drops to 5-17 and 0-2. GVSU will travel to Bellarmine on Sunday, April 1 for a non-conference doubleheader with game one beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Grand Valley State scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to seal its 5-0 win. GVSU recorded three home runs in the game. Sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra tripled to center field to start off the fourth inning and scored on as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski grounded out to second base. Junior designated player Elizabeth Smith walked and then scored on a home run to left field by senior first baseman Crista Buresh.
Woityra led off the fifth inning with a home run to center field and one out later Smith hit a home run of her own to left field to score the final run of the game.
Each team tallied five hits in the game, but Lake Superior State committed three errors.
Sophomore Lori Andjelich picked up her ninth win of the season (9-1) as she threw all seven innings of action. She allowed just five hits in the shutout and recorded 13 strikeouts, the second most in her career as a Laker.
Woityra was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Buresh went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored. Smith was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Lakers bats only got hotter in game two as they tallied 15 runs off of 14 hits. Grand Valley State started the scoring in the second inning as Buresh doubled to center field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After two walks, sophomore left fielder Karen Walters tallied a sacrifice hit to left field to bring in the first Laker run.
GVSU blew the game open in the third inning as it scored 10 runs on eight hits and three LSSU errors. Woityra singled up the middle to start off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Moleski. Woityra advanced to third base as Smith reached on an error by the short stop. Buresh singled to left field to bring home Woityra and Preuss singled up the middle to drive in the second run of the inning. Freshman catcher Breanne Kronberg was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sophomore third baseman Brecky Rudenga unloaded the bases as she singled to center field and advanced to second on a throwing error by the center fielder. Walters singled to score Rudenga and junior right fielder Sarah Holland singled to right field. Woityra walked and all three runs scored on a double to center field nby Moleski. Buresh drove in the final run of the inning on a double to left field.
Grand Valley added four more runs in the fourth inning as freshman Stephanee Schrader drew a one out walk. Freshman right fielder Rachel Plummer reached first on an error by the pitcher, moving Schrader to third. Woityra singled to right field to bring in a run and Plummer scored on a passed ball. A walk to Moleski brought up Smith who reached on an error by the first baseman, which scored the fourth run of the inning.
Buresh was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and Moleski went 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. Woityra was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a walk, and an RBI. Rudenga went 1-for-1 with three RBI, a walk, and a run scored and Walters was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
Junior pitcher Stephanie Cole (7-3) tallied the shutout win as she didn't allowed a hit in the game. She walked two batters and struck out five.
