Grand Valley State ended its spring trip with a 6-5 come from behind win over Nova Southeastern on Sunday. The Lakers finish the trip with a 10-5 overall record. GVSU is scheduled to play in the Lewis Invitational on Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18. The Lakers will play four games against Great Lakes Region opponents.
Nova Southeastern recorded the game's first run, scoring in the first inning. GVSU came back and quickly tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, freshman right fielder Rebecca Plummer singled through the right side. She advanced to second base as junior second baseman Kristin Moleski reached first on an erorr by the Sharks short stop. Junior designated hitter Elizabeth Smith singled through the left side to score the first Laker run.
The Sharks regained the lead as they posted three runs in the top of the second inning to go ahead 4-1. Grand Valley had a big inning of its own in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs. Junior catcher Katie Kring started off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Karen Walkters. Sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra singled up the middle and Plummer drove in Kring with a single through the left side. Moleski tallied the Lakers third straight single to score Woityra. Two batters later, senior first baseman Crista Buresh walked to load the bases. Junior center fielder Lisa Preuss singled through the left side and three runs scored as the left fielder also made an error on the play.
Nova Southeastern tallied another run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Lakers held on to the 6-5 win. Both teams recorded 11 hits in the game and the Sharks had two costly errors.
Junior second baseman Kristin Moleski went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman right fielder Rebecca Plummer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and sophomore short stop Nichole Woityra went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Junior Stephanie Cole picked up the win as she pitched five innings of action. She allowed nine hits, three earned runs, and struck out two. Sophomore Lori Andjelich recorded the save as she threw the final two innings, giving up two hits, one run, and struck out three batters.
