#12 Grand Valley Knocks Off Northwood, 59-43

#12 Grand Valley State knocked off Northwood, 59-43, Wednesday night in a game between two GLIAC North Division teams. The Lakers improve to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in the GLIAC, while the Timberwolves drop to 10-11 overall and 3-10 in conference play. GVSU will travel to Findlay on Saturday, Feb. 10 for a GLIAC crossover contest. Tipoff will be at 1:00 p.m.

Junior guard Crystal Zick scored the first five Lakers points, connecting on a jumper and a three-pointer to give GVSU an early 5-2 lead. Three more points by Zick and four by senior guard Taushauna Churchwell increased the Laker lead to 14-5 at the 14:57 mark. GVSU pushed its lead out to 13 points with 10:37 left in the first half on a jumper by senior center Julia Braseth. The Timberwolves cut the lead to four points, 25-21, as they outscored the Lakers 12-3 over a six minute span. Grand Valley ended the half scoring seven out of nine points to take a 32-23 lead at the break.

The Lakers started the second half outscoring Northwood, 14-2, to take a commanding 21 point lead at the 12:54 mark. Five different Lakers scored on the run. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp knocked down a three-pointer to put GVSU ahead, 53-30. Northwood ended the half on an 8-1 run, but it was not enough to overcome the Lakers 59-43 victory.

Grand Valley State tallied six more steals and seven more assists than Northwood. The Lakers also outrebounded the Timberwolves, 36-30 and sank five more three-pointers.

Junior guard Crystal Zick led GVSU with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Senior center Julia Braseth tallied 12 points and six rebounds, while senior guard Erika Ryskamp added 10 points, six rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Senior guard Taushauna Churchwell recorded seven points, two rebounds, an assist, and a steal and junior guard Erin Cyplik had five points, six rebounds. Junior guard Courtney Hammond posted four points, four rebounds, and two assists.
