GVSU's next match is at home in Allendale, Mich. against No. 9 Findlay on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.
The Lakers jumped out to an early lead as Callistus Eziukwu notched GVSU's first six points to push the Lakers to an 8-2 lead to start the game. Eziukwu finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Saginaw Valley came right back, taking the lead 9-8 on a jumper by Adam Gries and extending it to 13-8 after back-to-back layups by Gries and Adrian Taylor. David Thompson nailed a three and Jamerson came back with a layup after a block by Eziukwu to tie the game at 13.
Grand Valley grabbed the lead again at the 7:10 mark when Joel Whymer hit a long three-pointer. He hit another on Grand Valley's next possession to make the score 20-15. The Cardinals battled back late in the first half, and three-pointers by Mario Mackey at the 55 second and 13 second marks tied the game at 24, and it looked like the teams would head into the locker rooms that way. But Thompson launched a shot from half court with no time left on the clock to put the Lakers up 27-24 at the break.
Mackey, who finished with a game-high 20 points, hit another long ball early in the second, tying the game at 31 apiece. Jumpers by L.J. Kilgore and Lawrence Ross made the score 33-33. Kilgore finished with 11 points for Grand Valley. GVSU went on a 21-2 run starting at the 14:55 mark to put the game out of reach. By the time the run was over, there were less than nine minutes remaining and the score was 54-35 in favor of the Lakers. The closest that Saginaw Valley came down the stretch was 10, which came when Taylor hit a three-pointer with just 56 seconds remaining.
