Kim Wyngaard and Crystal Zick helped Grand Valley State University start off their conference schedule at 1-0. Zick scored 19 and added six assists while Wyngaard chipped in 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds as GVSU defeated Lake Superior State 77-66. Four Grand Valley players scored in the double digits in the game as the Lakers (4-2, 1-0) ran their winning streak to four straight.
Grand Valley scored the first six of the game, including three from Nicole Carr, to jump out to an early lead. Carr finished the game with 12 points on 5-6 shooting. Erin Cyplik's jumper with 12:16 left in the first half extended the Laker lead to eight points, 13-5. The lead reached double digits for the first time with 1:22 remaining in the first half when Wyngaard drilled a jumper to make the score 31-20. Lake Superior State's Katherine LaPrairie hit the last shot of the first 20 minutes to send the teams into the locker room with Grand Valley State holding onto a 31-22 lead. LaPrairie finished the game with 13 points, second on her team.
Cyplik started the second half with a three-point jumper to extend the GVSU lead to 34-22. She finished the day with seven points and six rebounds. The Lakers kept rolling from that point, turning that three-pointer into a 13-0 run that included six points from Carr. LSSU didn't get on the board in the second half until 4:35 had run off the clock. Shelle Rochon, who led her team with 15 points on the day, hit a jumper at the 15:25 mark to make the score 44-24.
After two free throws from Taylor Silas, Grand Valley State held a 22-point lead with less than eight minutes remaining, 63-41. The closest that Lake Superior State made it down the stretch happened when a Rochon long ball cut the lead to 10 at 74-64. Good free throw shooting down the stretch kept the Lakers ahead a gave them their fourth straight victory via a 77-66 win.
The Lakers return home to Allendale, Mich. to take on Saginaw Valley State University in their next contest. The game is on Thursday, Dec. 6 with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
