GVSU Advances To GLIAC Tournament Semifinals With 3-0 Win Over Michigan Tech

#7 Grand Valley State defeated Michigan Tech, 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-17) in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament on Wednesday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers are the #1 seed in the tournament and will host the semifinals and the finals. The first semifinal match between Hillsdale and Ashland will be played on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. and Grand Valley State will play Northern Michigan in the second match at 4:30 p.m. The GLIAC Tournament Championship match will be held on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4:00 p.m.

Grand Valley State took an early 7-3 lead, but Michigan Tech fought back to tie the game at 8-8. GVSU then went up 13-9, but once again MTU came back and tied the game at 13-13. GVSU scored the next three points to take a 16-13 lead and pushed it to 21-18. Michigan Tech tied the game at 26-26 and then again at 28-28, but Grand Valley scored the final two points to win game one, 30-28.

Game two started off closer as there were eight ties before GVSU scored three straight points to take a 14-11 lead. Michigan Tech cut the Laker lead to one point, 18-17, but GVSU went on a 3-0 run to go ahead, 21-17. The Lakers went up by four, 25-21 and then pushed their lead to six points, 29-23. MTU won the next point, but GVSU took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 30-24 game two win.

GVSU took a 7-3 lead in game three and then pushed its lead to 12-7 before MTU went on a 3-0 run to trail by just two points, 12-10. The Lakers went up 13-12 and then went on a 6-0 run to go up, 19-12. Grand Valley increased its lead to 12 points, 24-16 and the Huskies cut the lead to 27-17. It wasn't enough, however, as the Laker scored the final three points to win game three, 30-17.

Grand Valley State hit .203 as a team, while Michigan Tech hit just .125. GVSU posted 50 kills and seven service aces and Michigan Tech had 34 kills and four aces.

Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander tallied a match-high 11 kills and four digs, while senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple added 10 kills and two aces. Freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin recorded nine kills and a .364 hitting percentage and junior outside hitter Lauren Reber had seven kills and 16 digs. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted 39 assists, 11 digs, and six kills, while senior libero Allyson Riley added 22 digs.
