Lakers fall to Ashland in First Conference Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State University Men's Swimming and Diving team fell to Ashland in the team's first league meet of the season. The Lakers lost 146-138 on Saturday.

Sophomore Evan Kobes aided the Lakers' effort handing two first-place finishes in the 100-yard Backstroke (54.81) and in the 200-yard Medley Relay. Sophomore Hans Hill, junior Phil Watkins and sophomore Matt Witkowski joined Kobes in the relay for the victory (140.43).

Later, Hans Hill tacked on a win in the 100-yard breastroke (31.71) and a second-place finish in the 200-yard breastroke. Freshman Philip Kaseska followed Hill in the 100-yard Breaststroke to finish third.

Freshman Justin Pattermann also handed in a victory, finishing the 100-yard Butterfly in 52.96. He also tacked on two second-place finishes, one in the 200-yard IM and another in the 200-yard Butterfly, followed by Phil Watkins who finished third in the event.

On the board, sophomore Evan Betts won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives tailing 313.95 and 274.87, respectively. Freshman Patrick VanDommelen posted a second-place score of 257.78 in the 3-meter dive.

Freshman Jordan Schrotenboer won the 200-yard Backstroke (1:59.81), while also earning third-place in the 50-yard Freestyle and second-place in the 200-yard Freestyle. Matt Witkowski followed Schrotenboer finishing third in the 200-yard Freestyle.

Freshman Jeff Pauza handed in three second-place finishes, in the 1000-yard Freestyle, 500-yard Freestyle and in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. Jordan Schrotenboer, Aaron Renton and Aaron Phillippe joined Pauza in the Relay, finishing the race in 1:29.28.

The Lakers will travel to Calvin College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
