Women's Swimming and Diving Defeats Ashland 166-119

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State University Women's Swimming and Diving team started their season off strong swimming past Ashland in the team's first league meet of the season. The Lakers won 166-119 on Saturday.

Junior Danielle Buglio notched three victories in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:01.29), the 200-yard Backstroke (2:13.74) and was joined by sophomore Alison VanKampen, freshman Kim Baughman and junior Jenna Thayer to win the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:52.16). The medley team of freshman Jamie Gomez, sophomore Sam Stump, freshman Anna Polkowski and sophomore Allison Scholz earned second in the event.

Jenna Thayer aided the Laker's effort winning the 200-yard Butterfly (2:10.35) and the 100-yard Butterfly (59.32). Junior Erin Lynch followed Thayer in the 200-yard earning second-place.

Sophomore Katie Lawrie also handed in a victory, posting a time of 11:01.49 in the 1000-yard Freestyle. Later, she finished second in the 500-yard Freestyle, as senior Megan Hahler followed, finishing third. Hahler tacked on an additional third-place finish in the 1000-yard Freestyle.

Sam Stump and freshman Erin Kinney also tacked on a win for the Lakers, earning first-place in the 100-yard Breaststroke and 200-yard Freestyle, respectively. Stump also won the 200-yard Breastroke (2:32.42), followed by Alison VanKampen who finished second. VanKampen earned second in the 100-yard Breastroke, while freshman Jillian LaCosse earned third-place in the 200-yard Freestyle.

Allison Scholz and Kim Baughman earned second and third-place in the 50-yard Freestyle. Scholz also earned second-place in the 100-yard Freestyle.

Senior Liz Rodgers earned second-place in the 100-yard Backstroke and third-place in the 200-yard Backstroke.

On the board, Alison Sante won the 3-meter dive for the Lakers (204.22) and the 1-meter dive (225.30).

The Lakers will travel to Calvin College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
