#8 GVSU Ends Regular Season With 3-0 Win Over Saginaw Valley State

#8 Grand Valley State ended regular season play with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-19, 30-23) over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 27-3 overall and finish GLIAC play with a 17-1 record. Saginaw Valley State drops to 20-11 overall and 9-9 in the conference. Grand Valley State will host Michigan Tech in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Grand Valley State started off hot in the first game, going ahead 5-1, but Saginaw Valley State cut the lead to one point, 7-6. GVSU scored the next four points to take a 11-6 lead. SVSU scored the next points, but then the Lakers rattled off the next five to take a commanding 16-7 lead. GVSU pushed its lead to 10 points, 20-10, and then SVSU cut the lead to 23-15. GVSU went back up, 26-15, but the Cardinals came back to trail, 27-20. The Lakers scored the next three out of four points to take game one, 30-21.

Once again GVSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game two, but the Cardinals battled back to cut the lead to 10-9. Grand Valley State scored the next three points, however, Saginaw Valley State kept it close trailing 20-17. The Lakers added to their lead, going ahead, 23-18. SVSU cut the lead to 24-19, but the Lakers rattled off six straight points to win game two, 30-19.

The two teams battled back and forth to begin game three and eventually GVSU took a 15-12 lead. Saginaw Valley State scored the next six points to take an 18-15 lead. The Lakers then recorded the next four points to go up, 19-18. The two teams tied the score at 21-21 and the Lakers then posted six straight points to take a 27-21 lead. GVSU scored three out of the next five poinst to win game three, 30-23, and the match, 3-0.

Grand Valley State hit .347 as a team in the match, while Saginaw Valley State hit just .128. The Lakers tallied 25 more kills than the Cardinals.

Grand Valley State was led by senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple who tallied 13 kills, four digs, and hit .455. Freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin recorded 12 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander added 11 kills, two digs, one solo block, and hit .455. Junior outside hitter Lauren Reber posted 10 kills and nine digs, while hitting .308 and senior libero Allyson Riley had 14 digs and all five Laker service aces. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore recorded 41 assists, four kills, and four digs, while sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young contributed three kills, six digs, and two assists.

Grand Valley State will host Michigan Tech in a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
