Grand Valley State tallied a 75-49 win over Marygrove College in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Tuesday night. The Lakers improve to 3-2 overall, while the Mustangs drop to 2-7 overall. Grand Valley will open GLIAC play on the road on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Lake Superior State. Tipoff will be at 1:00 p.m.
Marygrove took an early 5-1 lead in the game, but GVSU went on a 12-2 run to go ahead, 13-6 at the 11:48 mark. The Mustangs cut the lead to two points, 15-13, but GVSU went on a 10-2 run to take a 10 point, 25-15, lead with 8:01 left in the half. Marygrove cut the lead to five points, but the Lakers ended the half on a 4-0 run to hold on to a 35-26 lead at the half.
The Lakers opened the second half on a 14-2 run over the first five minutes to take a 19-point lead (49-30). Marygrove was able to cut the lead to 16 points at the 9:18 mark, but Grand Valley then went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding 66-39 lead with just five minutes left in the game.
Sophomore forward Nicole Carr recorded a career-high in both points and rebounds in the game. She tallied 21 points and pulled down eight points. Senior guard Erin Cyplik posted 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while junior forward Kim Wyngaard added eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Sophomore center Lauren Buresh had nine points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Kara Crawford chipped in eight points, two rebounds, and two steals. Senior guard Crystal Zick added eight points, three steals, three assists, and two rebounds.
Grand Valley State will travel to Lake Superior State on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1:00 p.m. for its first GLIAC contest of the season.
