#19 Grand Valley State fell to Bellarmine, 66-59, on Sunday afternoon in Louisville, Ky. The Lakers drop to 0-2 overall, while Bellarmine improves to 2-2. GVSU will host Saint Joseph's College in its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6:00 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
The Lakers started off the game by scoring the first four points, but the Knights quickly took a 9-6 lead. Neither team scored over the next three minutes until senior guard Crystal Zick hit a three-pointer to tie the game at the 13:44 mark. Bellarmine regained the lead by a three-pointer by sophomore guard Taylor Silas started a Laker run, giving them a five point, 18-13 lead. The Knights went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 22-18 lead. The Lakers regained the lead on a three-pointer by senior guard Erin Cyplik and a jumper by Zick, but Bellarmine closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to take a 31-27 lead into the locker room.
Grand Valley came out in the second half and quickly tied the game at 31-31 and then again at 33-33. Bellarmine went on a 9-0 run to take a nine point, 42-33 lead at the 14:43 mark. GVSU didn't go away though, scoring the next nine straight to tie the game at 42-42. The Knights pushed their lead back to six points, 50-44, with 7:22 left in the game. GVSU came within two points on a jumper by sophomore forward Nicole Carr, but Bellarmine went back up by six points with under three minutes remaining. A layup by Zick pulled the Lakers to within four points, but three straight Bellarmine free throws sealed the victory for the Knights.
GVSU dominated the boards, pulling down 47 rebounds to Bellarmine's 35. Grand Valley State was led by senior guard Crystal Zick who tallied 16 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Kim Wyngaard added 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Erin Cyplik recorded 10 points, nine rebounds, and two steals and sophomore forward Nicole Carr had eight points, six rebounds, and two assists. Freshman foward Kara Crawford posted seven rebounds and six points and sophomore guard Taylor Silas chipped in seven rebounds and five points.
Grand Valley will play its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 20 against Saint Joseph's College at 6:00 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
