#9 Grand Valley State improved its winning streak to 15 consecutive games with a 3-0 (30-16, 30-26, 30-25) win over Gannon University on Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 20-2 overall and have tallied 20 or more wins in 10 straight seasons. GVSU also remains the lone undefeated team in the GLIAC North Division with a 10-0 record. Gannon drops to 5-13 overall and 1-9 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley State will return home for two more matches next weekend as they host Wayne State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Hillsdale on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
Grand Valley State jumped out to a 9-6 lead in game one and then went on a 5-0 run to go ahead, 14-6. Gannon cut the lead to four points, 18-14, but the Lakers scored the next nine points to take a commanding 27-14 lead. Gannon scored two more points, but the Lakers regained control scoring the final three points of the game to win 30-16.
GVSU started off strong again the game two, going up 10-7, but Gannon battled back to tie the game at 17-17. The Lakers then scored eight straight points to go ahead, 25-17. The Golden Knights cut the lead to three points, 29-26, but it was too late as Grand Valley closed out the game 30-26.
Game three was close in the beginning as both teams were tied at 14-14, but the Lakers took over scoring four consecutive points to go up, 18-14. Gannon took a 22-21 lead, but once again could not hold off a 4-0 Laker run that put GVSU ahead, 29-24. Gannon scored the next point, but GVSU closed out the game and the match with a 30-25 game three wins.
Grand Valley State hit .270 as a team, while Gannon hit just .053 in the match. The Lakers tallied 15 more kills, four more aces, and five more blocks in the match. Sixteen different Lakers contributed to the win for GVSU.
Senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple led the team with nine kills, while freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin added eight kills, one solo and six assisted blocks as she hit .438. Freshman outside hitter Leslie Curtis tallied eight kills, three digs and hit .316 and sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young had seven kills and five digs. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander recorded six kills and four assisted blocks. Junior setter Megan Walling had 19 assists and three digs and junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted 11 assists, three aces, and two digs. Senior libero Allyson Riley added 18 digs.
Grand Valley State will continue its five match home stint next weekend, hosting Wayne State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. and #11 Hillsdale on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m. The Wayne State match will be tape delayed on Comcast Local and will air on Oct. 17 at 6:00 a.m., Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m., and Oct. 19 at 9:30 p.m. #9 GVSU versus #11 Hillsdale features the only two remaining undefeated teams in the GLIAC.
