#9 Grand Valley State swept Mercyhurst, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-27) on Friday night in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU extended its winning streak to 14 straight matches. Grand Valley remains perfect in GLIAC action with a 9-0 record and is 19-2 overall. Mercyhurst falls to 14-8 overall and 2-7 in conference play. GVSU will host Gannon on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4:00 p.m. in the third of five straight home matches.
Grand Valley started off the match strong, going ahead 7-3, but Mercyhurst came back to come within one point, 7-6. GVSU then went on a 6-0 run to take a 13-6 lead. Mercyhurst then scored the next six out of seven points to trail, 16-13, but once again GVSU blew the game open by going on a 5-0 run to take a 20-13 lead. Mercyhurst cut the lead to six points, 23-17, however GVSU scored the next five points to go up, 28-17. GVSU closed out game, 30-19, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Grand Valley recorded a .250 hitting percentage, while Mercyhurst hit .000.
Mercyhurst took a quick 3-0 lead in game two, but GVSU battled right back to tie the game at 7-7 and then went on a 5-0 run of its own to take a 12-7 lead. GVSU went up 16-10 and then 20-14, before going on a 5-0 run to go ahead, 25-14. Mercyhurst cut the lead to 27-20, but GVSU scored three out of the next four points to win game two, 30-21. GVSU hit .200 in the game as a team, while Mercyhurst posted a -.044 hitting percentage.
Mercyhurst took a 10-7 lead in the third game, but GVSU went on a run and tied the game at 12-12. GVSU then scored six straight points to take a 18-12 lead. Mercyhurst scored five out of the next six points to trail by just two points, 19-17. GVSU then we up by five, 25-20, but once again Mercyhurst cut the lead to two, 27-25. GVSU had two match points, but Mercyhurst hung in to trail, 29-27. Grand Valley closed out the game and the match on a kill by Lauren Reber to win game three, 30-27. Neither team hit well in the final game as GVSU hit .098 and Mercyhurst tallied a .067 hitting percentage.
Grand Valley State hit .178 in the match, while Mercyhurst hit just .008. Grand Valley tallied 11 total team blocks and six service aces in the match.
GVSU was led by junior outside hitter Lauren Reber who tallied 11 kills, seven digs, and six assisted blocks. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander had eight kills, six assists, five digs, and five assisted blocks and freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin added five kills and four assisted blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young recorded four kills and seven digs, while senior libero Allyson Riley had 17 digs. Junior setter Megan Walling posted 13 assists and 10 digs and sophomore setter Meghan Scanlon added 14 assists and eight digs.
Grand Valley State will host Gannon on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 4:00 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
