#10 Grand Valley State travled to West Michigan rival Ferris State and tallied a 3-1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-24, 30-19) win on Friday evening. The Lakers improve to 25-3 overall and 15-1 in GLIAC play, while the Bulldogs drop to 18-9 overall and 10-6 in the conference. Grand Valley State will conclude regular season play next weekend at the GVSU Fieldhouse as they host Northwood on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
Ferris State jumped out early in game one, taking a 7-3 lead, but the Lakers went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 9-9. The teams tied the score at 10-10 and then GVSU posted a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. Grand Valley went ahead 21-17 and then scored the next three points to take a 24-17 lead. The Lakers closed out the game with a 30-21 victory. GVSU tallied 19 kills and no errors in the game, posting a .396 team hitting percentage, while FSU hit just .176.
The Lakers struck early in game two, posting a 4-0 lead and Ferris State tied the game at 7-7. Grand Valley took an 11-9 lead, but FSU scored the next three points to go up, 12-11. The Lakers then went on a 5-0 run of their own to take a 17-12 lead. Grand Valley went up, 21-17, but the Bulldogs battled back to score six straight points to take a 23-21 lead. The two teams went back and forth before tying the game at 27-27, but Ferris State closed out the second game, 30-27, by scoring the final three points.
Game three went back and forth until the Lakers took a 14-12 lead and then scored three more points to go ahead, 17-12. GVSU pushed its lead to 22-15 and then 26-19. The Bulldogs scored three points to cut the lead to 26-22, but it wasn't enough as the Lakers closed out game three, 30-24.
Game four began in a 7-7 tie until the Lakers rattled off six straight points to jump out to a 13-7 lead. Grand Valley then went up 20-15 and scored four points to take a 24-15 lead. The Lakers pushed their lead to 11 points, 28-17 and then scored the next two out of four points to win game four, 30-19 and clsoe out the match, 3-1.
Grand Valley State hit .343 as a team in the match, while Ferris State posted a .211 hitting percentage. GVSU recorded 21 more kills and 21 more digs, while the Bulldogs had five more aces and three more blocks.
Junior outside hitter Lauren Reber led GVSU with 18 kills, 14 digs, and two assists, while senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple added 17 kills, a .467 hitting percentage, three digs, one assisted blocks and one ace. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander recorded 17 kills, five digs, four assists, two assisted blocks, while hitting .361 and freshman Rebeccah Rapin had 10 kills, two digs, two assists, one assisted block and a .348 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young tallied 11 digs, five kills, and five assists and senior libero Allyson Riley added 23 digs and four assists. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted 46 assists, 20 digs, eight kills, and two aces, while redshirt freshman Janelle Beaudry had nine digs and two assists.
Grand Valley State will end the regular season at home as they host Northwood on Friday, Nov. 2 at 4:00 p.m. and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4:00 p.m.
