Lakers Win 19th Straight Match With 3-0 Victory at Michigan Tech

#8 Grand Valley State extended its winning streak to 19 consecutive matches with a 3-0 (37-35, 30-22, 30-19) win at Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon. GVSU improves to 24-2 overall and 14-0 in the GLIAC. The Lakers are the only undefeated team in the conference and sit atop the GLIAC North Division. Michigan Tech drops 6-14 overall and 4-9 in the league. GVSU will travel to Northern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 4:00 p.m.

Michigan Tech came put strong early on in game one, taling a 6-3 lead and pushed it to 13-9. The Lakers cut the lead to two points, 13-11, but the Huskies scored the next three points to go up, 16-11 and force GVSU to take a timeout. The Lakers didn't give up, however, and fought back to cut the lead to 22-21 and then tied it at 24-24. Grand Valley scored four straight points to take a 29-26 lead, but the Huskies scored the next three to tie it at 29-29. The two teams tied it up five more times before the Lakers scored the final two points on back-to-back kills by junior outside hitter Lauren Reber. GVSU won game one, 37-35.

Grand Valley State took a 9-8 lead and then went on a 5-0 run to go ahead, 14-8. The Lakers went up, 22-14 and scored the next three points to go up, 25-14. Michigan Tech scored three straight points to cut the lead to 26-18. The Lakers went up 28-19, needing just two more points to close out the game, but the Huskies cut the lead to seven points, 28-21. GVSU scored the next two out of three points, to win game two, 30-22.

The Lakers jumped out early in game three, taking a 9-6 lead and then scored the next three points to go up, 12-6. GVSU didn't back down, scoring five straight points to push the lead to 23-11. Grand Valley dominated throughout all of game three, going ahead by 12 points, 29-17. GVSU closed out the match with a 30-19 game three win.

Grand Valley State hit .312 as a team, while the Huskies hit just .157. The Lakers tallied 19 more kills than the Huskies in the match. Leading the way for GVSU was junior outside hitter Lauren Reber, who recorded 19 kills, two digs, and a .394 hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Danielle Alexander tallied 12 kills, three assists, and hit .310, while senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple added nine kills, four digs, and two assists. Junior setter Jamie Ashmore posted 45 assists, five kills, and 10 digs, while senior libero Allyson Riley added 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Meredith Young recorded 11 digs and three kills and redshirt freshman Janelle Beaudry had six digs and two assists.

The Lakers will conclude their trip to the UP with a match at Northern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m.
