#8 Grand Valley State started off its four match road stint with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-15) sweep at Lake Superior State on Friday night. GVSU improves to 23-2 overall and remains perfect in GLIAC play with a 13-0 record, while LSSU drops to 7-17 overall and 2-10 in the GLIAC. Grand Valley extends its winning streak to 18 straight matches, tying the second longest streak in school history. GVSU will travel to Michigan Tech on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m. and to Northern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m.
Grand Valley jumped out to am early 10-5 lead in game one and then kept its five point lead, going ahead, 15-10. Lake Superior State cut the lead to 21-19, but then GVSU went on a 8-0 run to sit at game point, 29-19. LSSU won the next points, but GVSU closed out game one, 30-20, on the next point. Grand Valley tallied 17 kills and just two errors in the game for a .405 hitting percentage. Lake Superior State recorded nine kills and 11 errors for a -.044 hitting percentage.
Lake Superior State took a 4-2 lead, but GVSU tied it up at 4-4 and then took a 7-4 lead. LSSU wouldn't go away, however, and tied the game back up at 10-10. Grand Valley jumped out to a five point, 19-14 lead. GVSU then went on a 4-0 run and went up, 23-14. Lake Superior State fought back a few times, but couldn't overcome the GVSU lead. GVSU held on and won game two, 30-24.
Grand Valley took a 7-3 lead in the third game and then rattled off six straight points to go up, 13-3 and never looked back. GVSU went up 15-7 and then scored the next seven points, go jump out to a 22-7 lead. Lake Superior State made a run to score four consecutive points, but it was too late as GVSU was already up 28-14. Grand Valley scored the next two out of three points to win game three, 30-15, and close out the match, 3-0. GVSU hit an outstanding .500 in the final game, recording 13 kills and two errors, while LSSU had nine kills and six errors for a .103 hitting percentage.
Grand Valley State hit .340 as a team, while Lake Superior State hit just .039. GVSU tallied 20 more kills, five more aces, and six more team blocks in the win.
Grand Valley was led by senior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple who tallied 10 kills, two assists, two solo and three assisted blocks, while hitting .625. Senior middle blocker Danielle Alexander added seven kills and two assisted blocks, while freshman middle blocker Rebeccah Rapin recorded nine kills, four assisted blocks, and a .400 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter had six kills, eight digs, three aces, and hit .545, while junior setter Jamie Ashmore added 27 assists, three kills, and eight digs. Senior libero Allyson Riley tallied 13 digs and two aces in the win.
Grand Valley will resume play on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m. at Michigan Tech and then on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Northern Michigan.
