Lakers Drop First Match Of The Season At Northwood

Oct. 17, 2007

Box Score

The GVSU women's tennis team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday at the hands of GLIAC power Northwood. The match featured the top two and only remaining undefeated teams in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves defeated the Lakers by a score of 7-2 and improve to 6-0 on the season. The two Laker wins are the first that any opponent had put on the scoreboard against Northwood this season, as its five previous wins had all been 9-0 sweeps. Grand Valley State falls to 7-1 overall, 6-1 in the GLIAC, and hold on to second place all by itself. The Lakers will play host to Wayne State this Friday in Allendale at 3:30 pm and are right back at it on Saturday with a match against Findlay, also in Allendale. That match is scheduled for 10:00 am.

GVSU was able to take a doubles point away from Northwood--the first time an opponent as done so all season. Freshmen Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston defeated Nicole Kromer and Maelys Scerri in No. 3 doubles by an 8-3 margin. McCall Monte and Audrey Koopsen fell in No. 1 doubles, 8-5 while Emily Zellner and Jenna Killips were ousted in No. 2 doubles, 8-4.

In singles, Northwood took five of six matches en route to the victory. The lone bright spot came in No. 5 slot, where Trout triumphed over Kromer, 6-3, 7-6. Trout has now won eight matches in a row and is 11-2 on the season. Jenna Killips was outplayed in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Koopsen, Johnston, and Grashorn were beaten in No. 2, 3 and 4, singles respectively, in straight sets. Rounding out play, freshman Jackie Shipman dropped her first match of the year, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6.
