Lakers Successful Against Indianapolis

Final Stats

The Grand Valley State University men's swimming and diving team won seven events en route to a 145-98 victory over Indianapolis.

The men's diving team swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, as Evan Betts took first in both events. He earned 256.73 points in the 3-meter and 251.63 in the 1-meter. Joel Overway followed Betts in both events, earning 252.36 points in the 3-meter dive and 238.88 points in the 1-meter. Ryan Smith added a third place finish in both dives, posting 245.40 points in the 3-meter and 224.70 points in the 1-meter. Scott Klaasen added a fourth place finish in the 1-meter and a fifth place finish in the 3-meter.

Justin Barkel won two events to help the Lakers to their victory, clocking a 2:11.90 200-yard breastroke, and a 1:59.88 200-yard IM. Hans Hill followed Barkel in the 200-yard breastroke, finishing third (2:16.77), while Justin Vasquez finished just behind Barkel in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:01.78 to also place third.

Justin Barkel also handed in a second place finish, with a time of 44.88 in the mixed 100-yard freestyle.

The Lakers swept the 200-yard butterfly, as Tony Stumpo won the event for GVSU, finishing in 2:02.74. Kyle Barrons (2:03.29) and Phil Watkins (2:04.25) finished second and third, respectively.

Kyle Burgher completed the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.48 to win the event. Ryan Kraai finished in 5:00.59, to earn third place.

Ross Perry raced to a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle, with a time of 10:15.00. Ryan Kraai finished right behind Perry with a time of 10:19.03, to finish third.

Dan Kimble turned in a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, completing the event in 1:47.50. Aaron Renton finished the 50-yard freestyle in 22.90, to also finish second. Paul Tansey also earned second place, as he raced to finish the mixed 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.66.

The men's 200-yard medley relay team of Justin Vasquez, Hans Hill, Kyle Barrons and Aaron Renton turned in time of 1:39.25 to win the event. Paul Tansey, Jimmy Donahue, Phil Watkins and Ben Jylkka earned third place, completing the race in 1:42.35.

Ben Julkka, Aaron Renton, Kyle Barrons and Dan Kimble handed in a time of 1:29.98, finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They were followed by Aaron Phillippe, Paul Tansey, Kyle Burgher and Corey Fellows who finished third (1:31.56).

The Lakers will host Hope College Jan. 26 at 6:00 p.m.
