GVSU Falls To Northwood, 6-3

The Laker women's tennis team was defeated by Northwood University (4-0) on Tuesday by a score of 6-3. GVSU suffers its first loss of the season and is now 2-1. The Lakers will be in action this weekend as they travel to the U.P. to take on Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State on Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30.

GVSU started off strong, taking two of three doubles matches from the Timberwolves. Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte went on to defeat Julia Goncalves and Nicole Kromer by an 8-3 count. Also victorious for the Lakers were Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander, who topped Cristina Oliviera and Whitney Parr, 8-2. Falling for the Lakers were Emily Zellner and Lindsay Grimmer at the hands of Sue Rossano and Desiree Roset, 8-5.

Northwood was able to capture five of six singles matches from the GVSU. Sue Rossano defeated Lindsay Grimmer, 6-0, 6-2 in No. 1 slot. GLIAC Player of the Week Emily Zellner was able to win a set at No. 4 singles, but eventually fell, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Nicole Kromer. Freshman Whitney Bindus picked up the lone singles win for GVSU, beating Allison Smith 6-0, 6-1.
